I own and operate Advanced Planning Solutions which has specialized in LTC planning and insurance (traditional LTCi and Hybrids) as well as Medicare transition planning and products since the mid 1990s. I am licensed with about a dozen states including all states in the Southeast US and a handful of other states including TX, PA, and NY.
Its interesting to see our life stories of how we got to LTCPG. Here’s mine.
Undergrad (Economics) from Emory University (1979), worked for a year as a Business Analyst for Dun and Bradstreet and then returned to school for an MBA in Finance from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. From then to the early 1990s, I worked as a Management Consultant (mostly to the banking industry in NYC) and then as a Consultant and Marketing Specialist for a mainframe software company with a Portfolio Management and Accounting product for large insurers. In 1991, I became CFO for a Medical Supply Firm that specialized in selling medical supplies to Long Term Care facilities including those that were mostly funded by Medicaid as well as various types of LTC facilities funded by private pay residents. This “enlightened” me to the variance in the quality of life provided for residents and was the beginning in my interest in aging issues and “aging well.”
I transitioned to personal financial planning when the Medical Supply firm changed ownership in the early/mid 1990s. I obtained the Certified Financial Planner designation (stopped renewing in 2021) and was active with the Financial Planning Association (FPA) both locally and nationally. I also made a decision to become an LTC specialist for fee-only financial planners and their clients and was busy the next few years giving talks on LTC planning issues for various financial planning organizations as well as state and local Accountant and Attorney associations. I was also active with the Georgia Division of Aging LTC Awareness campaigns and served as President of the Georgia Chapter of FPA. The connections made during this period have supported my business over the last 25+ years.
From the start, I have operated as an independent broker representing a large cross- section of carriers to help assure the best possible solution for each client’s needs. This has been a key point in maintaining relationships with these professional contacts. They count on me to serve their clients’ best interests just as they do themselves. At the end of the 1990s, some of these professionals asked if I could expand my business to include Medicare related issues so that has been added into my LTC planning specialization.
On a personal level, Susan and I met on the tennis court shortly after I moved to Atlanta in the mid 1980s and have now been married for 34 yrs. We spend our time between Marietta, GA and Hilton Head, SC and, when not working or volunteering, keep active biking, run/walking, and in the gym. I play competitive tennis (singles) which motivates me to keep fit and am proud to say that, for 2022, had a final ranking in the top ten of the US (65+ age category). It is interesting that, even among the top tennis players, you can see how much strength and mobility diminish from one year to the next which really emphasizes the importance of fitness for all of us as we age.
We have one grown child, Lindsay, who was recently married and is an accomplished singer with several songs on Spotify, Apple Music, etc… Ask me and I’ll gladly share more details about her music!
